IDSViz

About this site

IDSViz is an interactive tool for exploring infant-directed speech (IDS) in English and Spanish. Browse vowel and consonant patterns, see how phonemes are realized phonetically in the IPA confusion matrix, and listen to audio clips of phonemes in context drawn from real recordings.

What you can do

Phoneme Plots

Plot vowels in formant space (F1/F2/F3/duration) and explore consonant variation by phonetic realization, preceding segment, or following segment.

Confusion Matrix

View an IPA confusion matrix showing how phonemic categories map to their phonetic realizations in the English IDS dataset.

Audio Clips

Search for any IPA phoneme and play back trimmed audio clips extracted from the source recordings, optionally with their neighboring sounds for context.

Originally created by Dr. Ekaterina (Katya) Khlystova. Continued development and maintenance by Gabriel Scharff. Thanks to Rainey, Angela, and the RAs who contributed to this project.
